Care decisions & financial clarity
What does a clinical trial pay for?
A trial may offer study-paid treatment, tests or visits. It is not a promise of free healthcare. Your insurer—and sometimes you—may still pay for routine care.
Research costs and routine care are different
Research-only tests, extra study visits and investigational treatment may be sponsor-paid. Routine visits, ordinary lab tests and imaging you would need anyway may be billed to insurance. Screening schedules vary; not every trial includes full labs or imaging, and screening costs require confirmation even before enrollment.
NCI: Who pays for clinical trials? explains these cost categories. For Medicare, qualifying trials have specific routine-cost coverage rules, and deductibles or coinsurance may apply. Medicare clinical research coverage.
Ask before you consent
- Which treatment, screening visits, labs and scans does the sponsor pay for?
- What routine care will be billed to insurance? What could I owe?
- Does the study replace any care I currently need, or add to it?
- How many visits are required, and where? Are travel or childcare reimbursed?
- What payment is offered, when is it earned, and what happens if I leave early?
- Can the site give me a written coverage summary and my insurer a cost estimate?
How savings become credible
- Benchmark estimate
- A dated price reference, such as a Medicare fee or payer-specific quote, matched to the service and setting. A benchmark is not your actual bill.
- Study-confirmed estimate
- The site confirms sponsor coverage and the insurer estimates what the plan and patient would otherwise pay for clinically needed care.
- Claims-validated savings
- Completed services, sponsor payment evidence and claims or EOB records are reconciled against a documented, clinically appropriate baseline. Current Emverity records do not automatically establish this evidence.
Plan savings and patient savings are separate portions of the same otherwise-payable cost. Stipends are patient benefits. An extra research-only scan is not an avoided claim if it would never otherwise have been needed. Vital signs included in a visit must not be counted again.
No single national savings amount
Prices and coverage vary by service, site, insurer and benefit design. Emverity’s ZIP lookup identifies statewide Medicare physician-service benchmarks; it is not a commercial insurance quote or a full hospital bill. Labs may need a separate clinical laboratory fee source, and imaging may have professional and facility components.
Clinical trials are research, not guaranteed equivalent treatment. Some use placebo or add treatment to usual care. Do not stop or delay needed care. Discuss suitability with your clinician; the study team confirms eligibility. Emverity routes referrals rather than running trials.
